Each point is a battle that can be won or lost. A series of points strategically won earns you a game. A series of games strategically won earns you a set. A series of strategically won sets wins a match. This beautiful metaphor of life requires great physical fitness and the highest level technique, of course. But, more than anything, it requires a mental mastery of situations, knowing when and where some points are more critical than others, where you can be more relaxed and where you have to play all your cards. You have to keep your head in any situation.
In life, little battles are won and lost every day that, together, shape victory or defeat in the bigger picture. And the sum of projects won and lost will eventually shape a life. And, as in tennis, it is not the linear sum of wins and losses which decides the outcome, but rather the combination of certain wins and certain losses that occurred at the right times.
Morale is affected by wins or losses in small successive battles. A loss lowers the morale, and after several such it lowers a lot. The same happens with victoires. It raises the morale, sometimes so much so that we feel ourselves superior. We are neither inferior nor superior because of having lost or won battles. And we should keep it very clear in our mind: whether you win or you lose the point, the level of the mind should remain the same.
Therefore, life is a huge game made up of millions of small battles that we are always fighting. It isn't how much you win, but which battle, and when that counts. Life is, in a sense, our best and greatest opponent. And we, if we want to be, are the champions.
